The world:

A PIRATE DUOLOGY

Set in the mid-1700s on an Earth, non-fantasy alternative world called Old Gaia.

We start the series in the middle of the northern hemisphere. Although Sea of Roses remains on the seas, we visit many islands such as Dunecaster, a pirate safe island, and an unnamed island that is well-used by pirates for marooning others. At the Kou Pelin Islands, we face off against the original owners of The Laughing Siren, which is the head fleet ship belonging to Queen Mary Anne. She is the Queen of the Eastern continent.

At the end of the first book, Alister takes safe haven from a terrible storm at the Tempest Islands and waits for Rosetta - who never shows.

In Storms of Paine, we go to Tortaya, a pirate safe haven. Although it is a relatively small island, and closer to the King of the Western continent, the town feels big and lively with the mischief. There are many taverns and brothels as well as shops. Right next to the wharf, a kilometre long market has been set up for boats and their traders to sell their wares from questionable origins. The island is filled with criminals, whores, and workers who are looking to either make a living off travellers or buy a way off the island and into a better life.

In book 2, we also go to Dunecaster, which is larger than Tortaya, but mostly the same.

Lester is where Rosetta is from, one of the islands very close to Queen Mary Anne’s country. She seeks a few months refuge here hiding from a certain half-blind pirate, before sailing out to the southern hemisphere.

We learn little about the southern hemisphere, but we do visit Dead Man’s Island - an active volcano island with lava spouting down one side and a cliff wall on the other with a passageway underneath it.
